Who Dat ? Blues Band formed with its first lineup in the summer of 1999. Brian could no longer repress the need to attain the satisfaction achieved from live performances. After reuniting with his old band and college mates after an almost 20 year hiatus and speaking with them about playing some good blues music, it was on! Next thing you know Brian, Herman and Ronnie are back at it; in the recording studio/ practice location/making music. Brian held down the guitarist slot because: 1. It was his idea to reunite the group. 2. He had some original tunes he wanted to record. 3. He knew the other guys never wanted to stop playing in the first place. Ronnie the “Coach” assumed the bass player and musical director role because: 1. He loves to play bass and really understands the music. 2. He has a real knack for arranging. 3. see #1 above
Next in the equation was Herman (he plays drums) who brought to the band:
1. Understands “staying in the pocket”. 2. Lots of musical equipment. 3. Did I mention the rehearsal space/recording studio? With the lineup nearly complete, the most important aspect of the band had to be determined. Who's going to lift the heavy equipment?? While we were pondering an answer to that question, we thought it would be a better idea to find a singer. So in the process of meeting a number of potential vocalists, Brian received a call from a guy who knew a guy who… Oh the stories we could tell! -- We had one singer audition that could not sing in front of people. So much for live performances? Another singer did not return after the first practice (and that was a good thing!) Well, what can we say? After the debut and selection of Benjamin “Big Ben” Hall as Who Dat ? Blues Band's first lead singer, the line up was complete, and went on a run of nearly six years and over 200 performances. After a successful debut CD and a string of performed but unrecorded originals "Big Ben" decide to leave the band after the Summer 2005 season. Much love and respect to him as a "Brother in Blues". With the lead vocal spot open, the band set out looking for a strong vocal presence to continue the tradition of serving up good music. And while it may certainly sound cliché, Who Dat? Blues Band believes its Fans, Followers an Future audiences deserve a good product. Blue music certainly has its roots in the deep south and the new Voice of Who Dat? Blues Band's roots are also from "the south" however, the south is the south of the Continent of Africa. Yes Vocalist, Gwinyai Mumbiro's, who has been describes as a vocal percussionist, place of birth is Zimbabwe. Gwinyai, while new to the blues genre has vocal credits including performances in Gospel, R&B, Pop and Rap and a most recently singing pop and jazz a cappella music with the Euphonics. Gwinyai Mumbiro, so far a good fit for Who Dat? Blues Band, is sure to raise some eyebrows with his vocal talent.
