Who Dat? Blues Band to leave Kalamazoo audience
bobbing
By Mark Wedel | Special to the Kalamazoo Gazette
KALAMAZOO -They could be the Where Y’at? band.
The Who Dat? Blues Band has members who have been all
over - Kalamazoo to Zimbabwe.
Ronnie “Coach” Parker (bass and literal coach of the band
and a coach for Albion College football) is originally from
Kalamazoo, Herman McCall (drums) is from Chicago, Brian
Anderson (guitar) came from Ypsilanti, Michael Doyle (sax)
is from New York City, and Gwinyai Mumbiro (vocals) is
from Zimbabwe.
They are officially a Jackson-Albion band, though they’re
still scattered, as Mumbiro now lives in Denver.
But they all live in the groove.
“We like to call it a groove blues,” Parker said. “You got to
stop and smell the groove.”
Who Dat? started in 1999, but its original singer left. About
that time, 2004, Parker started bugging Albion football player
Mumbiro about singing.
“He was always giving me crap in practice, and he was a
really tough guy to play for,” Mumbiro said with a laugh.
Parker told him he’d heard Mumbiro was a singer, “and he
didn’t believe me.”
